SELVEDGE Magazine | Issue 82 LaceRegular price £22.00 £22.00
Issue 82 Lace: the light fantastic
This emotive material is a favourite amongst contemporary artists who manipulate its scale and substance to comment on gender and a myriad other messages lace conveys. Architects, on the other hand, enjoy its structural qualities of strength and delicacy. Finally enjoy the elegant beauty of lace observed in the photographs of Christine Mathieu on display at Calais’ Cite Dentelle Mode museum, and as we look forward to the spectacle of a Royal Wedding we wonder if Meghan Markle will choose a dress of Cluny lace – or maybe she will choose something by the American designer Vera Wang? SELVEDGE Magazine | Issue 102 MendRegular price £22.00 £22.00
September / October 2021
"Darning is having a moment. We are surrounded by books about darning, workshops even high street brands are getting in on the act. There is no denying darning is cool and to own a visibly darned sweater is a status symbol. I wonder why we value darning so highly? Go back 200 years and everybody darned, as Vanessa Jones’ explains in her article Makers and Menders. There was little choice and certainly no kudos to mending. Back then, clothes were valued: for the fabric itself; precious, expensive and replaced rarely. Wear was a source of embarrassment and even shame as Kate Sekules describes in Evil in your Wardrobe. So, the skill to create a discrete repair was prized and practised. Girls would produce brightly coloured darning samplers that mimicked the patterns of woven cloth. The object was to use a matching thread for the actual darn so the wear would disappear. To produce visible mend would have been seen as wearing a badge of impoverishment and idleness.
Curiously, it is the pivot in the value system that accounts for the current trend. Now the majority of the clothes we wear have little financial or emotional value, yet our conscience drives us to increase their longevity and reduce their environmental impact. The incentive today is to use darning as a political statement, you can't do this if the darning is invisible. We talk to contemporary darners about why they darn and look at other methods for extending the life of clothes. Catching the eye is also the speciality of Mexican fashion designer and Instagram sensation Melania Chavarría. Collecting, altering and designing garments, she crafts striking tableaux vivants where her outfits tune in to Mexico City’s street art, producing images that brim with a bold presence and bracing, vibrant energy."

CONQUISTA | Issue 21Regular price £20.00 £20.00
Conquista 21: the introvert’s edition. A bit like all the others then.
Here's what's to pore through in issue 21...
A British cycling dynasty whose members don’t like to draw attention to their achievements – for fear of “living in the past”. The nameless motorised sidekicks of the six-day scene. An astonishing Grand Tour achievement that no one noticed – not even the team that had pulled it off. A road trip into the wild and remote depths of Spain in celebration of high literature. A race with a thousand starters that you’ve never heard of. And a trip to the World Championships with some antipodean also-rans.
“I have ridden with two unbelievable descenders in my life: Sean Kelly and my Aunty Margaret.” Joe Earley (son of Martin Earley and Catherine Swinnerton).
After telling the story of Bernadette Swinnerton in issue 20, Suze Clemitson concludes her history of a remarkable cycling dynasty by telling the tales of younger siblings Catherine and Margaret. Don’t miss part two of Searching for the Swinnerton Sisters.
Ernest Hemingway called Spain “the last good country left”. Tom Owen and photographer Matt Grayson rode from Madrid to Pamplona, the two cities most closely associated with the author, across some of the wild and remote areas he loved above all. They tell the story of their adventures in Papa’s Bravas.
