About Lyle Ah Sam:
Lyle Ah Sam is a First Nations artist and owner of Soul Reign. He is a Mitakoodi / Wakka Wakka man who grew up in Larrakia, Northern Territory. He is based in Dharawal, NSW. His knowledge is passed down from his elders. His art and practice hold strong cultural significance and spiritual value.
Lyle is a contemporary Raark artist that uses traditional mediums and techniques. His education and expertise is knowledge passed down to him by his Uncle Johnny Daylight-Lacey. Uncle Johnny Daylight-Lacey was taught by his elder, Uncle Joseph Baird-Wallis, whose teacher was Uncle David Malangi.
The story and subject in his works, whether it be an animal or a species of plant, possess a spiritual essence — a soul. His art explores this vitality within his subject and how it's connected and influenced by the landscape and spirit of place. His predominant medium is acrylic on canvas.
His palette is earthy ochre hues that hold cultural significance. Lyle’s inspiration is sourced from his culture and relationship with land, sky, and sea.
Soul Reign acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ continuing connection to land, place, waters and community. We pay our respects to them, their heritage and cultures; and to elders past, present and emerging.

About the Work:
The intent is to evoke inspiration and deep recognition of the unique value, connection, and bond to land and sky of Lyle's indigenous culture.
The White Crane embodies the divine masculine & feminine energies within us all. The White Crane stands tall, chest out and chin up. They are aware of the part they play. They tell us ‘Be proud of the sum of the parts and marvel in the whole, as you are connected to it all".
The water lily teaches us about resilience, growing from and through the mud. The water lily teaches us about fertility and the possibilities of life in all of its beauty.

About the artwork:
Keturah depicts the puli puli (rocks) at two different sites. She paints the landscapes at Haasts Bluff where she grew up and also at Karrkurrutintja (Lake Mcdonald in Pintupi), located west of Kintore along the Western Australia/Northern Territory border.
Keturah has been inspired by the painting legacy and tutorage from her grandmother and mother, though has developed a distinctive style over her practice. Keturah uses different colours and hues to depict the ways the puli puli change colours with the weather, especially at sunrise and sunset. “The sand hills I paint are my mother’s story and the rocks I paint are my own story. My paintings are about my story and my mother’s… I like to paint; painting helps me forget my troubles. I paint every day. My Grandmother used to say to me when I was younger: “One day you will paint.”
