La Corvette has been making cauldron-cooked olive oil black soap at its factory in Marseille using traditional expertise for over 125 years. How do you use black soap paste in the garden?

Black soap is used in France as a natural insectide. To protect plants and roses against aphids, whiteflies and mealybugs, thoroughly mix about 1 tablespoon of black soap paste with 1 litre of water and spray the mixture on the plants, not forgetting under leaves, Repeat after two days.

Doing this at cooler times of the day avoids any risk of leaves getting burnt by the hot midday sun.

Can I use it for household cleaning?

Of course! It’s a very fuss-free, versatile cleanser, so therefore economical. No more nasty chemicals and no fainting spells from strong chemicals.

For standard machine washing: Add 3 tablespoons of black soap paste for every 5 kilos of laundry. Add 100ml of white vinegar as a natural softener. Add natural essential oils for fragrance, if you like.

How do I replace other cleaners with liquid black soap?

While it’s well known in Europe, Australians are not so familiar with black soap and its many uses. Here are a few FAQs:

For fabric stain removal: Place about a teaspoon on your fabric, rub lightly and leave for a few minutes. Launder in your washing machine as usual.

As black soap is very concentrated, for light coloured fabrics (such as white linens and cottons) we recommend testing it on a small, inconspicuous area prior to use.

For deep cleaning: Dilute 40ml in 5 litres of warm water.

For cleaning and conditioning leather: Dilute 15ml in 1.5 litres of warm water. Dampen a cloth or rag and pat the leather clean (rather than rubbing). The shine on the leather will be restored.

To clean and degrease surfaces (countertops, bathtubs, timber, ovens, copper, silver), patios and interior floors: Dilute 15ml in 5 litres of warm water. Does not require rinsing.

Can I use black soap paste on my pet?

Yes. Start by rinsing your pet’s coat and massage about 40ml of black soap paste on their coat. Rinse and wipe dry.
