LODESTARS ANTHOLOGY | Issue 16 Spain
Regular price €20,95 €20,95BACK IN STOCK LATE FEB. PRE-ORDER NOW!
An ode to slow travel, splendour and sun. Que viva España.
For this magazine, Lodestar's contributors have descended into caves in the name of cheese, gone in search of volcanoes, wandered ancient pilgrim paths, ridden horses into the sunset, been enthralled by architecture, cooked the way their grandparents did and penned odes to lace. They have explored places that come with meaning.
Some destinations are ‘home’, others are steeped in memory, and a few are being discovered for the very first time, the siren’s call impossible to resist. You can read this zest in their words and see the ardour in their images, because when someone creates with love and respect you feel it. You’re there with them. This is how you discover and are reacquainted with Spain - through the eyes of others.
Featured destinations: Ibiza, Tarifa, Oviedo, Toledo, Granada, Segovia, Seville, Valencia, Lanzarote, Montserrat, Formentera, San Sebastián, Santiago de Compostela

THE TASMANIAN HONEY CO | Leatherwood Honey
Regular price €10,95 €10,95
Tasmanian Leatherwood is naturally organic by virtue of the fact of where it is produced.
Consider for a moment the following images of a place: Ancient rainforests located on the global at latitude 42 degrees south is shared only by southernmost New Zealand and Tierra del Fuego.
At this latitude, the circumpolar winds whip up a constant westerly wind known as the Roaring Forties. These winds bring with them heavy moisture laden air drawn off the Great Southern Ocean only to deposit much of it as rain on the western side of Tasmania at the same time watering the rainforest where the Leatherwood trees grow and produce its golden harvest.
Think of the Leatherwood honey as the ‘distillate’ of this magic place. Leatherwood possesses remarkable aromas and flavours; a true distillate of a magnificent ancient landscape. Spicy and piquant…
Tasmania lies on latitude 42 south, sharing this latitude only with the South Island of New Zealand and Southern Chile. Generally a mountainous and inhospitable area. For a brief 6-8 weeks of the year, summer comes to this wild place and with it the annual blooming of the Leatherwood tree, Eucryphia Lucida.
The tree bears an abundance of extremely delicate white flowers with a fresh piquant scent. The bees visit these flowers for six weeks from January to mid-March and collect the distinctive aromatic nectar from them. During this time, The Tasmanian Honey Company's beekeepers actually camp in the remote wilderness while they remove the surplus honey from the beehives, enabling them to provide this highly sought after honey to connoisseurs around the world.
UNCOMPROMISABLE RAW HONEY
In keeping with The Tasmanian Honey Company's philosophical commitment to bringing one of the natures most unique gifts to customers in its uncompromised state, they have adopted a special low-temperature preparation technique. In carefully managing the extraction of the honey from the combs and its cleaning they are able to preserve both the floral essences and the innate vitality of their honey resulting in an aromatic and naturally organic food.
Because such low temperatures are used in the production, it does not inhibit the honey's natural tendency to crystalise, so to make the final product easy to use we encourage the honey to set with an ultra-fine crystal structure. This imparts to its a buttery and spreadable texture at room temperature. Also easy enough to spoon in and mix in whatever beverage you wish, from a ‘hot toddy’ to a honey lemon tea.
Most supermarket commercial brands of honey use high temperatures to delay the crystallising process and make production more efficient however this heat destroys the delicate flora essences, changes the flavour and generally compromises the other qualities and potential benefits of honey.
ALPERSTEIN DESIGNS | Chris Black Cotton Socks
Regular price €18,95 €18,95
These cotton socks are based on artwork by Chris Black from Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association. They will have you hemming your pants way high. Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association are an incorporated non-profit, Tiwi governed organisation that was established in 1989. Jilamara is in the remote aboriginal community of Milikapiti, overlooking the Arafura Sea, on the north coast of Melville Island, the larger of two Islands that make up the Tiwi Islands.
Cotton Socks
Size: 8-11
Made in Australia.
Chris Black was born at Milikapiti Community, where he has spent the majority of his life. He is part of a large clan, consisting of three main families – the Bush, Black and Brown family names make up the majority of the Miartuwee Clan.
Chris attended high school at Kormilda College in Darwin. On return to Milikapiti, Chris was nurtured by his Aminayi (Grandfather) Black Joe who was a renowned Tiwi artist. Chris remembers this wise old man very well. Black Joe was a great carver, artist, spear-maker and culture man who created Tiwi songs for Chris when he was young. When Chris attends ceremony with family he sings these songs that were given to him by Black Joe. The memory of his aminayi is the main influence on his arts practice today. Looking at old designs painted in his grandfather’s era inspires Chris greatly and gradually over time he has become one of the exciting emerging artists currently working at Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association.
Also known as ‘Kojak’, he creates colourful compositions of jilamara (Tiwi body paint designs), various types of fish found around Melville Island and the Jarrangini (Buffalo). He paints his unique contemporary styles with natural earth pigments collected from around Milikapiti and processed by hand at the art centre. White and yellow ochre are collected and ground into a fine powder, the yellow is then cooked on an open fire into the red that make up the three main colours of the Tiwi palette. Chris’ unique style has caught the attention of many people in recent times and one of his limited-edition prints was recently licensed as a tattoo through the Copyright Agency – a poetic creative development that speaks to the body art (jilamara) foundations of Tiwi art making styles.
Jilamara artists are renowned for producing innovative contemporary works based on traditional ceremonial body painting designs, clan totems and Tiwi creation stories. Artists work from a palette of natural ochres to produce paintings on linen, canvas, paper, printmaking, weaving, bark & carved wood.
Over the course of three decades Jilamara artists have established themselves among the most recognised Indigenous artists nationally and internationally. With the support of the art centre, these artists have played a key role in cultural maintenance and renewal for the Tiwi people.

Gija man, Lindsay Malay works from the Warmun Art Centre, located 200kms outside of Kunnannura in the Kimberley, Western Australia. Warmun is renounced for its artists' use of natural ochre and pigments to denote a contemporary expression of Country and culture and its reputation is felt both nationally and internationally due to the calibre of highly successful artists in the community.
Lindsay's work is vibrant and transfixing, telling the story of Warlawoon, the Country he inherited from his Grandfather and of which his family regained traditional ownership of in 2010.
